Speakers
Jesse James and Logan Dodds
The Trade Up Collective
As young, passionate plumbers – Jesse James and Logan Dodds love their trade and the opportunities it has afforded them.
Logan credits his career in plumbing for a solid foundation, great work ethic, and ability to work from anywhere in the world. Jesse left school at 16 to pursue his plumbing apprenticeship. Once qualified, he headed to America to live and work – chasing his dreams, funded by his solid trade.
The boys’ over-arching message is clear: With a good attitude, and a trade under your belt, the world truly is your oyster.

Kellie
CPB Contractors
Raised in Coromandel, Kellie describes herself as an average student who often struggled in the school learning environment. Her first taste of the workforce was her mum organizing school holiday work sweeping the shop floor and serving customers for a screen printer and packing grocery bags and stocking shelves at the local Four Square. Fast forward to present day she puts her current achievement working as an HR Coordinator down to creating the right attitude, learning how to communicate, build relationships, surrounding herself with the right people, resources and tools to get her through the challenging times and continuing to strive forward. Kellie has a vision and a true desire to help people create the right attitude, to see their own inner potential and map succession by growing and nurturing their own natural abilities. She believes by creating the right mindset and awareness around how we communicate, act and react, we can break down the barriers that hold us back from achieving and believing in ourselves. It all begins from within.

Brendon Van Rooyen
Brendon was born in Zimbabwe, and his family had to leave in 1999 due to safety reasons. They emigrated to England where he went to school until 2008. Brendon says “I ended up leaving school with mainly C grades but went on to study Engineering in a technical college. As I grew older, I started as a labourer in construction and landed myself a job as junior Architectural technician. I did this for 6 months but found sitting in an office day in and day out with little communication between people very hard, so I started looking for other opportunities. I had a friend who was a stud welder for a company in the UK and I got a job as a trainee steel decker and stud welder. I have been it doing ever since and love it. It has given me endless opportunities to better progress my career and me as a person. Construction has also allowed me to travel a lot and see many different countries and get paid for it.”
The boys’ over-arching message is clear: With a good attitude, and a trade under your belt, the world truly is your oyster.

Jeremy Sole
Etco
Jeremy Sole is the Chief Executive Officer of the Electrical Training Company, commonly known as Etco. Etco currently employs more than 700 electrician apprentices and trains over 2,200 which is more than 50% on New Zealand’s electrical apprentices. At Etco, Jeremy works with a really cool team of dedicated people and spends time lobbying Parliament, and at industry events and conferences in NZ and Australia. Having left school to take on an apprenticeship, Jeremy then had roles in service management, sales, training, management, as a business owner, and politics. Jeremy says his career has been ‘careering all over the place’ with interesting jobs rather than a planned career. His working life is a good demonstration of what you can do with the confidence, tenacity, self-belief and analytical mindset you develop while working towards a trade qualification. Jeremy says trade qualifications are a gateway – not a destination.

Etco is the largest employer of apprentices in New Zealand. We operate in the electrical sector and our apprentices graduate as registered electricians usually with experience in commercial, industrial and domestic areas. Etco apprentices go on to be successful electricians, some start their own businesses, some specialise in high tech industrial and marine installations, some travel and earn with their skills, and some go on to university. This is a future proof and exciting and challenging career gateway – much of the high-tech stuff our apprentices will work with in their careers hasn’t even been invented yet.
